In a time where DIYing is more popular and accessible than before it’s very tempting to try to DIY your website yourself. Not only is DIYing in general easier now but it’s also easier to DIY your website than it was 20 years ago. There are an endless amount of DIY-friendly drag-and-drop website platforms like Showit. If you want a robust and challenging website you can always use good ol’ WordPress.

But Just Because You Can DIY Your Website Doesn’t Mean that You Should!

Why You Shouldn’t DIY Your Website from Scratch if You’re Not a Designer & What to Do Instead

It’s More Time-Consuming than You Think

Because there are so many easy ways to design a website what used to take hours of custom coding can take 30 mins. But are you really going to get an effective website that brings new clients to your business in only 30 mins? There are a lot of things to keep in mind when you’re designing your website. If you start from scratch it’s probably going lead to you feeling frustrated and overwhelmed.

No Strategy Behind the Design

There are a lot of factors to consider when designing your website pages. So that your website can appeal to your ideal clients and have a great user experience. Which aren’t necessarily quick things to learn. So if you don’t know how to make your website strategic you’d almost be better off not having one at all. People are judging your website the second they got on it. So if it looks ugly, isn’t easy to navigate, doesn’t clearly explain how someone can work with you, etc. they going to leave. And on top of that, they’ve now lost some trust in you.

It Causes You to Procrastinate Launching Your Website

Because designing a website from scratch can be time-consuming and overwhelming a lot of times this will cause procrastinating until your website is “perfect” to launch. Obviously, you don’t want your website not to look sloppy and unprofessional. But getting your website launched should be a fast process if done right. Even if it’s not right the first time you can always edit it and improve it later.

So How Should You Design Your Website Instead?

Work With a Designer

Obviously, choosing to work with a designer that’s going to be the most ideal option. You get a designer’s trained eye on your project. Plus you’ll have a marginal amount of work to complete compared to DIYing. However, while this is the ideal option it’s not necessarily an option for your budget especially if your business is newer.

But What if You Can’t Afford a Designer Yet?

Use a Website Template

Launching your website with a website template created by a designer is kind of the best of both worlds. Not only are website templates way more cost-effective for small budgets. But you get the strategy that you’d be missing out on if you DIYed from scratch.
